POSTDOCTORAL POSITION

The Astroinformatics Laboratory (Astrolab) at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM), in collaboration with the Millennium Institute for Astrophysics (MAS), is offering a postdoctoral position in data science and astronomy. CMM is an interdisciplinary research center based at the University of Chile (UChile), focused on the application of mathematical modeling and high-performance computing tools to a wide range of multidisciplinary projects from the sciences, the industry and the public sector. Since its establishment in 2009, Astrolab has led sevaral projects in transient discovery and characterization, interferometric image synthesis and galaxy classification, among others. MAS is an institute whose main objective is to conduct large scale surveys of the sky and to train a new generation of scientists and engineers for the challenges faced in the era of “Big Data in Astronomy”. MAS has four main lines of research: discovery and characterization of supernova and their application as distance indicators; the Milky Way and the local group; transients, variables and planets; and astrostatistics and astroinformatics.

Astrolab is involved in the construction of a new astronomical alert broker (ALeRCE) in collaboration with other institutions in Chile and the USA and is offering a postdoctoral position for an astronomer or a researcher with experience in astronomy to help build the automated tools required to capture, annotate, classify, rank and react to alerts coming from different large etendue telescopes. The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of astronomers, mathematicians and engineers and is also expected to undergo her/his own research in related areas of astronomy.

The applicant must send a CV and a two page letter of intention by Aug 15, 2017. Selected candidates will be required to apply to the Fondecyt Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, whose deadline is Aug 23, 2017. This program funds positions for up to three years for researcher already holding a Ph.D, and will be complemented with additional funds from CMM and MAS.
